Just wanted to post this great quote real quick.
Today was induction Sunday for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. This year’s class included Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog, Umpire Doug Harvey, broadcaster Jon Miller, sports writer Bill Madden, and even Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member John Fogerty whose song, “Centerfield” has been played to open induction Sunday for years now.
Dawson spoke about how some people make the wrong choices and choose the dark side with performance enhancing substances during his speech. Harvey’s 20 minute speech was previously taped. He has throat cancer now, but still spoke live, too.
Dawson’s quote highlight of the day was, “It’s an honor beyond words. I didn’t play this game with this goal in mind, but I’m living proof that if you love this game, the game will love you back. I am proof that any young person who can hear my voice right now can be standing here as I am.”
After it had rained through much of Harvey’s taped speech the sun came out just before he began to speak live. His two quote highlights were, “If you’re a true baseball fan, you need to visit Cooperstown. This is home, and you need to touch home. I’ll be watching to make sure you do.” The man who was nicknamed “God” during his career also joked, “I want you to notice that I stopped the rain,” and then went on to point out, “I had less rainouts than anyone else in the world.”
For me though the quote of the day came from legendary manager Whitey Herzog who managed for 18 years in the majors for teams like the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals. His best quote was…
“Ever since I was elected in December people have asked, “What’s it feel like to be a Hall of Famer?” Now I can tell you what it feels like. It feels like going to heaven before you die.”
I have a hunch most of the other Hall of Famers that were alive during their induction would agree.
