Monster vs. Aliens in 3-D Movie Review

Normally on Friday night’s my wife and I go out and get crazy. OK, we don’t really. The extent of most of our Friday nights include getting together with my wife’s parents, and her brother and his wife for “Family Game Night.” Games usually consists of playing Wii, Cranium, or Partini for a few hours. All rather enjoyable endeavors.

Occasionally though someone has to get up early on a Saturday to work or for other various reasons. Sometimes on the weeks that this happens we just get together and go out for dinner or something. This past Friday we went to T.G.I.Fridays, and then off to the movies.

We went to see Monsters vs. Aliens in 3-D. It cost us $11.50 per ticket after the $3 fee they tacked on for the 3-D glasses. Here is the info on the movie, and my review.

I must admit the last 3-D movie I had watched was Friday the 13th: Part III in 3-D. I also don’t go OUT to the movies all that often. I usually wait for things to come out on DVD or on cable rather than spending the money for the overpriced movie tickets.

To start off about half of the previews were in 3-D, and there looks to e some really good children’s movies coming out soon. One of them was “Up!”. Now I had seen other previews for this movie and it looked liked something I didn’t want to see. This 3-D preview made it look rather funny, and changed my mind. Another preview was for “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” which excited my wife. (she is a 4th grade teacher)

This new “True 3-D” thing is pretty amazing, the technology has come a long long way. After the previews and the opening shot of outer space in 3-D I was convinced that the extra $3.00 they tacked on to each movie ticket for the glasses was worth it. It was very cool to say the least. Had meatballs, and asteroids coming out of the screen at us.

The basic story of the film while trying to not give a lot away is that Susan Murphy is preparing for her wedding to local TV news weatherman Derek Dietl. While trying to relax a bit away from everyone out in the gazebo she sees a giant meteor coming toward her. she tries to run but cannot escape. While standing at the altar she begins to show the effects of the meteor and then grows and grows and well grows. Luckily the military were already dispatched to intercept the object which they knew was about to land in Modesto, California. They get her under control and ship her off to a top secret facility which has been holding all sorts of monsters for decades to keep the public safe.

In the facility / monster prison Susan is given the name Ginormica by the Warden W.R. Monger. She then meets an odd and hilarious group of monsters led by Dr. Cockroach. the other monsters included B.O.B, the Missing Link, and Insectosaurus. They are doomed to live out their lives in this high security facility.

That is until Gallaxhar sends a probe to retrieve the powerful element which was in the meteor and caused Susan to grow to Ginormica proportions. General Monger talks the President into letting his group of monsters fight off the alien threat. If they succeeded the monsters would gain their freedom.

After the long battle filled with many laughs – the Monsters do indeed earn their freedom, but not without some casualties along the way. Susan returns home with her new friends as a hero, but only briefly as they are asked to head to France to save the world again – most likely in a huge moneymaking sequel.

I would highly recommend Monsters vs. Aliens to everyone. It was funny, great for kids and adults too. Even at $11.50 a ticket it was well worth it. Oh, and yes, I would spend the $11.50 a ticket to go see that sequel I mentioned. Hopefully it too will be in 3-D.

Green Jell-o

I rate this film a five plates of jiggling green Jell-o favorite. You will understand once you see the movie. Those that don’t see it, take that as five stars.

A couple last notes:

I also cannot wait to see the “prequel” to this film as they are rather popular in recent times. There has to be a prequel, because we all know that if Stephen Colbert is the President of the United States it could only come after he served eight years as Jon Stewart’s vice president.

and Finally one warning. During the opening scene in the sky monitoring scene. DUCK!

Enjoy the film.

I wanted to include a video clip here about the process of making the movie, but it is from Yahoo. they say there is supposed to be a shar link under the video, but there is not.

So here is the link if you would like to watch the cool video about the making of rhte movie and the future of filmmaking.
