Here it is the day after the world finds out who is going to Super Bowl XLVI and it seems more people are talking about Steven Tyler’s National Anthem performance than the biggest sports spectacular in the world.
Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith has ties to Boston and the New England area because despite he was born in New York while the band was being formed they moved to Boston and used it as their home base. So, that along with his wider range of popularity as a judge on American Idol combine to make him a great choice to perform the National Anthem before the New England Patriots play for their chance to play in their 7th Super Bowl.
Now everyone is giving the iconic rock frontman all sorts of grief over his performance! He is Steven Tyler. Did people not expect him to sing the Anthem AS Steven Tyler? Were they expecting him to show up and sing a straight-laced monotonous version of the song? If so, they just don’t know Tyler.
I actually think that is the biggest problem of this whole matter. I think his broadened fan base that has been added since his joining American Idol just don’t know him. Most people that watch a show like American Idol have probably not heard much Aerosmith material, and even moreso have not seen the band and Tyler performing live. His voice is pitchy, and while fellow judge Randy Jackson might not approve of that sort of thing it is how Tyler and the band has been for quite some time. The band has been around and successful for 4+ decades. I am pretty sure the people who were fans of the band for the first 20-30 years of that time probably didn’t find many problems with his singing of the Anthem, other than perhaps the few liberties he took with changing a word here or there.
Basically, AI fans? Calm down. Everything is OK. Just go back to watching your “competition” each week and enjoy it. Us Aerosmith fans will go on enjoying their music long after many of the winners and runner-ups on your show are gone and forgotten.
Also, AI fans please see if you can answer these questions without going and looking it up on Google.
1. What band was Randy Jackson a member of in 1986-87?
1A. What instrument did he play in that band?
1B. Who did he replace in that band for that brief time?
2. On what weekly TV show of the early 1990s did Jennifer Lopez appear in 61 episodes of?
3. Name any two members of Aerosmith besides Steven Tyler?
