I am still not sure why they have to try and remake EVERYTHING nowadays. After the first episode I want to say this remake misses by a long shot. This is not because I am trying to compare it with the original because it would obviously pale in comparison. Afterall it is the original series that was a big enough pop culture phenomenon to have people still making movies and remakes of the TV show 35 years later, how could anything stack up against it. I just don’t think it is all that good. The fight scenes are hard to follow and almost dizzying with the camera jumping all over the place. The scene with the car blowing up was staged in a bad way. A car blows up, it shouldn’t blow up straight up in the air. It should blow UP and out to the sides. This explosion took out nothing but the car itself, not a single piece of collateral damage. Just not very believable to me.
Of course, with the T&A factor that comes with any Charlie’s Angels titled show or movie and the built-in audience that will watch the show just because of Minka Kelly being a part of it and I think the show will last for the whole season. If the story lines get better throughout the season it even has a chance to get picked up for another season. As is though, for me anyway, it SHOULD only last a handful of episodes…perhaps 6 or so. If they find a way to get Carlos Bernard back into future shows it will definitely be a plus, too. He gets arrested in the pilot, but if he escapes and comes back as a recurring nemesis it’s be great. Also, a big thumbs up on Victor Garber as the voice of Charlie, excellent choice.
Trivia tidbit that many probably don’t realize: Minka Kelly is actually the oldest of the three Angels in the show. She may have been playing a high school teen on Friday Night Lights, but she just turned 31 a couples months ago! Her co-stars Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh are just 27 and 28 years old.
I give it a rating of 3 out of 6 original Angels…but not the 3 original ones, instead Sabrina, Tiffany, and Julie (not Jill, Kelly, or Kris).
